Being straight with you about the evidence
Shilajit is the most talked-about ingredient in men’s supplements right now. It is also one of the least well studied in humans. There are small trials and a long history of traditional use; there is not the depth of randomised, placebo-controlled evidence behind it that there is behind creatine or citrulline. We are not going to pretend otherwise.
If you want the best-evidenced product on this site, it is creatine. If you want to try shilajit because you have heard about it and want to judge for yourself, this is the honest form to try it in.
The thing worth checking before you buy shilajit from anyone
Shilajit is mined, not manufactured, which makes heavy-metal contamination a real risk in this category — lead, arsenic and mercury have all turned up in tested products. Ask whoever is selling it for the heavy-metal test on the batch you are getting. If they cannot produce one, that tells you something. That goes for us too: we will pass on whatever the manufacturer gives us, and we will tell you if they give us nothing.
Resin, capsules or gummies
Resin is the least processed of the three. It is also the least convenient — it is sticky, it needs dissolving in warm water or milk, and it is not something you throw in a gym bag. If convenience matters more to you than form, take the gummies instead.
